European Day of Action for the Steel Sector
Steel workers across Europe call on EU policy makers, national governments, and steel companies to take urgent action to safeguard the sector and protect jobs !
The European steel sector is in crisis:
- Steel production in Europe (EU) has reduced by 30 million tonnes over the past year.
- Thousands of workers are in temporary unemployment.
- There are genuine fears that up to 50% of Europe’s steelmaking capacity could be lost.
- While Europe suffers, global steel overcapacity continues to rise peaking at approx. 2 500 mmt at the end of 2023.
- While steel sites in Europe are mothballed, China has increased their capacity by 2.2% and India by 7.5%.
Steel is central to Europe’s green transition and its strategic autonomy; it must be safeguarded!
European steel workers and their unions are fighting:
- For a new European steel action plan, for greener steel made in Europe, to guarantee a future for European steel and its workers.
- For a level international playing field and an end to unfair trade.
- For an affordable and secure supply of energy for the industry.
- For good industrial jobs.
- For steel companies to respect their workers and the communities that they depend upon.
